The purpose of the Aspen Fales Shoulder Widening project is to improve safety and operation along approximately three miles of U.S. 395, in Mono County. Currently, this segment of highway has the non-standard design of 2 to 3 foot shoulders. Shoulders will be widened to eight feet in order to reduce run-off-the-road collisions, the most common type of accident in the project area. Wider shoulders would give errant drivers a larger paved area in which to redirect their vehicles back onto the traveled way or to pull off the road.
