Welcome

The Landscape Architecture Program provides essential and diverse professional expertise needed to support the implementation of Caltrans mission, vision and goals. Our scope of work facilitates the delivery of a “safe, sustainable, integrated and efficient transportation system to enhance California’s economy and livability.” Areas of expertise include: multi-modal transportation and facility design, visual impact assessments, aesthetics, mitigation, roadside management, water and natural resource conservation, ecological restoration, site planning and development, and strategies for including livability and sustainability principles into the planning and design of California’s state transportation system.

Landscape Architecture Design

Design

Landscape Architecture Design includes design guidance and Caltrans standards on planting, irrigation, erosion control, and aesthetics.

This section also contains guidance on how District Landscape Architects can program a roadside "SHOPP" (State Highway Operation and Protection Program) project.

Livability

Sustainability

Livability describes the degree to which the built environment improves human quality of life.

Livability includes guidance on Roadside Facilities (Transportation Art, Gateway Monuments, Community Identification, and Blue Star Memorials), the Safety Roadside Rest Area System, Scenic Highways, "Main Streets" and "Landscaped" Freeways.

Sustainability

Sustainability - People, Planet, Economy

Sustainability describes the degree to which human activities are enhancing economic, social and environmental vitality over the long-term. Our Sustainability principles emphasize transportation facilities that are designed and operated to provide long term benefits to people, the planet, and our common prosperity.

This section also includes information on Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) Compliance.
